I didn't know that Francis Bacon (the painter) wrote, or had so many quotations. I guess he is a "collateral descendant" (whatever that means) of the Elizabethan philosopher Francis Bacon of the 16th and 17th century. I really like some of his quotes about painting though.
"All artists are vain, they long to be recognised and to leave something to posterity. They want to be loved, and at the same time they want to be free. But nobody is free." - Francis Bacon
But then again, I love all quotes involving freedom.
"I am flawed if I'm not free " -Rilo Kiley
"I'm not anti-anything, I just want to be free." - Suicidal Tendencies
"If you love something, set it free." - Proverb
"But as long as I love you I'm not free ." - Bob Dylan
"All good things are wild and free." - Henry David Thoreau
"There is no must in art because art is free." - Wassily Kandinsky
"I am you; you are ME. You are the waves; I am the ocean. Know this and be free, be divine." - Sri Sathya Sai Baba
More Francis Bacon......sorry tangent.......
"Before I start painting I have a slightly ambiguous feeling: happiness is a special excitement because unhappiness is always possible a moment later." - Francis Bacon
"Images also help me find and realise ideas. I look at hundreds of very different, contrasting images and I pinch details from them, rather like people who eat from other people’s plates." -Francis Bacon
"I should have been, I don’t know, a con-man, a robber or a prostitute. But it was vanity that made me choose painting, vanity and chance." - Francis Bacon
"I need the city; I need to know there are people around me strolling, arguing, fucking—living, and yet I go out very rarely; I stay here in my cage." - Francis Bacon
"I don’t think people are born artists; I think it comes from a mixture of your surroundings, the people you meet, and luck. " - Francis Bacon
and for the record, I don't even like Francis Bacon's paintings. (aesthetically)
