SEVENTEEN

THEY ONLY want you when you're seventeen
When you're 21, you're no fun
They take a POLAROID and let you go
Say they'll let you know, so c'mon
2 months after my 18th birthday ^^^^^^^^^

I was listening to anthems for a 17-year old girl by Broken Social Scene at Kathleen's by DJ Jenna today. I think that was my myspace song for months when I was younger. I think I got a myspace when I was 16 or 17. I mean, I was a senior in hs when I was 17 and a freshman in college. I realized there's lots of songs about being 17. Like the BSS one, and Ladytron - Seventeen. I can't kick the notion, everything was better when I was 17. I don't want to turn 22 this year. I want to stay 21 forever. Forever 21. I dont want to grow up. I'm graduating in a few weeks. I'll have a college degree. Life is what you make it right?

Used to be one of the rotten ones and I liked you for that
Used to be one of the rotten ones and I liked you for that
Used to be one of the rotten ones and I liked you for that
Now you're all gone got your make-up on and you're not coming back
Can't you come back?
Now you're all gone got your make-up on and you're not coming back
Bleaching your teeth, smiling flash, talking trash, under your breath
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me
Park that car, drop that phone, sleep on the floor, dream about me

The PHILISTINE, May 1899

Heart 2 Heart Talks with Grown-Ups by the Pastor of his Flock
An eight-year-old girl in East Aurora was required by her teacher to write a composition and the next day handed in the following brief but startling romance:

Once there was a poor young man who was in love with a Rich Girl, whose mother had a large Candy Store. The poor young man wanted to marry the candy lady’s daughter, but he was too poor to buy the Furniture. One day a Bad Man offered him twenty-five dollars to become a drunkard. The poor young man was dreadfully tempted, because he wanted to be rich enuf to marry the candy lady’s daughter. But when he got to the saloon door with the Bad Man he said: ‘I will not break my pledge even to be rich. Get thee behind me Satan.’ So he went home and on the way he found a pocket-book with one hundred million dollars in it. So he went and told the candy store lady’s daughter and they were married. They had a lovely wedding, and the next day they had twins. Thus you see that Virtue is its own reward.

Philistinism via wikipedia

Philistinism is a derogatory term used to describe a particular attitude or set of values. A person called a Philistine (in the relevant sense), is said to despise or undervalue art, beauty, intellectual content, and/or spiritual values. Philistines are also said to be materialistic, to favor conventional social values unthinkingly, and to favour forms of art that have a cheap and easy appeal (e.g. kitsch).

Philistinism affords a contrast to Bohemianism, as the character of a smugly conventional bourgeois social group perceived to lack all the
desirably soulful 'bohemian' characteristics, especially an artistic temperament and a broad cultural horizon open to the avant-garde. To the chosen few, the 'Philistines' embodied a smug, anti-intellectual threatening majority, in the 'culture wars' of the 19th century.

Goethe had several comments on the type. "The Philistine not only ignores all conditions of life which are not his own but also demands that the rest of mankind should fashion its mode of existence after his own", and "What is a philistine? A hollow gut, full of fear and hope that God will have mercy!"

Arthur Danto on Cindy Sherman Film Stills

The invariant subject is The Girl in Trouble, even if The Girl herself does not always know it. In Barbie-doll garments, in the suburbs or at the beach or in the city, The Girl is always alone, waiting, worried, watchful, but she is wary of, waiting for, worried about, and her very posture and expression phenomenologically imply The Other: the Stalker, the Saver, the Evil and Good who struggle for her possession. She is the Girl Detective; she is America's Sweetheart; she is the Girl We Left Behind, soft and fluttering in a world of hard menace: the Young Housewife, pretty in her apron, threatened in her kitchen Cindy Starlet, Daddy's Brave Girl, The Whore with the Golden Heart, Somebody's Stenog, Girl Friday with obstacles to meet, enemies to overcome, eyes to lift the scales from, hard hearts to soften, the Kid in the Chorus, love light burning in her big, big eyes, with a smile for everyone, a kind word for all, not a mean bone in her body, The Girl Next Door, Everyman's Dream of Happiness.

nikki farquharson + RGB

As I was reading this month's Missbehave, which they keep sending me, (and I didn't pay for!) I noticed some familiar art. I friended Nikki Farquharson on myspace my freshman year of college or something, but they're featuring her sweet art in the fashion spread this month. In addition, she has a website called Random Got Beautiful. I'm not really sure how I ran into her internet entity first, myspace or RGB?:

Nikki Farquharson began Random Got Beautiful in March 2007. This online collage of random photographs is open for public participation. The idea is to take objects of various colours out of their original context and place them together to create a new one. Random Got Beautiful (RGB), relies on a collaborative effort while also supporting self promotion. Click an image to take you to the extermal site of the person who provided that photo.

Weird! My friends and I contributed a few photos a few years ago when it started! It's really cool to see the collages grow, and see some of Nikki's work published in a trendy fashion mag!

Sooooooo I think you should all submit some weird photos I know you have!!

I just can't take much seriously anymore. I mean I've always loved fashion, but everything is just so similar these days. It just comes pre-packaged for everyone. What ever happened to personal and individual style? Maybe it's the age I'm at. I actually Like JCDC RTW...via Elle. I'm not usually one to post runway photos, of course of love Betsey Johnson's Fall RTW too, but check this......LOL. I mean this is just fall 2009, his other stuff is crazy sexy cool 2!

Adult Swim

I rarely watch TV. ever. but whenever I do seem to catch some Adult Swim I tend to enjoy it. I liked ATHF in high school. Last night, I watched Adult Swim until about 2 or 3am. I fell asleep in the middle, and then woke up later. Derek was eating pizza and ranch dressing, surfing facebook and youtube, chatting to David Wain via fb, and playing with my dog. I felt like I was on drugs, but I liked it. I realized Adult Swim is really good, I didn't doubt it before but, ya. It's quite aesthetically pleasing, besides hysterical, and they play J Dilla and MF Doom all night.

Rationale:

The hazard today is no longer that the future we imagine is too ideal, and therefore likely to encourage heedless revolutionary zeal and violence. It is rather that we have become paralyzed determinants about what is coming. Like TV commercials and globalization and consumerism on the Web, the future is not annoying but inevitable, something that just happens, usually much faster than we'd like. We are in danger or losing the idea that a future is created, bit-by-bit, out of our political desires and choices. That's why we need positive visions to balance the fashionably cynical ones, need them now more than ever.

Tony Alva & Jay Adams

I'm cleaning and I found this old business card to this dude, Jeff Black. Jeff Black used to play in a band with Tony Alva back in the day. He was also a DJ and is still a Graphic Designer. Anyways, Jenna and I met him when we were 17 because he works the Alva shop in Oceanside, and gave us good deals on Alva shirts. We also bullshitted with him for a long time cuz he saw me hit the curb with my car when I was trying to park. He told me it was too early to be drinking. I told him I was distracted by Jenna singing David Bowie. That day, Jenna and I drove the entire 101-HWY along the coast in SD and ate ice cream. And just to add, Jay Adams was always my favorite. So, after this recent trip to Florida I can't kick the notion of the OCEAN. I miss it badly. I'm listening to pseudo Sublime bands, and dreaming of when Jacob will shape me a new board, and maybe when I'll move back to socal or f-l. I can't wait to go to Hawaii, but I'm preparing for it to be different from when I was growing up. I can't wait for summer, screw spring. SUMMER. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
ps I also found the business card to my hottie tattoo artist from Pacific Beach when I turned 18 woop!
